Our Pi Day presentation is by Dan Meyer on the topic:

When Will I Use This: The Mathematics of Breaking a Guinness World Record

Students often wonder about the math they learn: "When will I ever use this?" Dan Meyer will describe how the math you learn in school – both the math content and the Common Core Math Practices – can help you (yes you!) break a Guinness World Record.

Dan Meyer is the Chief Academic Officer at Desmos where he explores the future of math, technology, and learning. He is an advocate for better math instruction and has appeared on CNN, Good Morning America, Everyday with Rachel Ray, and TED.com. Dan taught high school math to students who didn't like high school math and has worked with teachers internationally and in all 50 States. Dan has been the featured speaker at the California Mathematics Council Asilomar and Palm Springs Math Conferences and was named one of Tech & Learning's 30 Leaders of the Future.

All teachers, administrators are invited to join us. Dan's presentation and Q&A will end by noon with a raffle and an activity packet available to all attendees. Those who are pre-registered will be admitted free to the Lawrence Hall of Science and the presentation, and are free to visit the many wonderful math and science exhibits at the Hall of Science after the presentation.

Parking is available at $1 per hour in the UC LHS Parking Lots. Transportation is available via AC Transit bus #65 which runs hourly from the downtown Berkeley BART Station to LHS.
